Second school construction project in Lilongwe, Malawi

A secondary school for the community in the village of Mzungu

In 2026, construction will begin on a much-needed secondary school in Malawi, located in the immediate vicinity of the Tadala abc primary school (grades 1–8), which was already co-financed by the PASS Late Year Benefit 2023. This will give children from Mzungu and the surrounding villages the opportunity to seamlessly continue their education after 8th grade – a crucial step for their educational and future prospects.

In Malawi, attending secondary school from grade 9 onwards is subject to fees. For many families, this is unaffordable, which is why countless young people have to end their school careers after primary school. Other reasons for dropping out of school include long and dangerous journeys to school and poor learning conditions, such as overcrowded or unfurnished classrooms. This is exactly where our project comes in: the new secondary school is being built in close proximity to the primary school and the children's homes. This will enable safe, short journeys to school and keep the next level of education within reach. For many young people, this brings a secondary school diploma and with it access to universities, scholarship programs, or easier entry into the job market within reach.

Eight modern classrooms, a staff room, an office, sanitary facilities, and a private well for water supply are planned. A kitchen belonging to the school will provide regular nutritious meals for the children and young people.

The project is being implemented locally with abc-Gesellschaft e.V., which was also our first point of contact during the construction of the primary school.

About the abc-Gesellschaft e.V.

The abc-Gesellschaft e.V. was founded in 1984 by committed citizens led by publisher Franz-Josef Kuhn (Spectra Lehrmittel-Verlag, now part of the Westermann Group). Its goal is to promote educational institutions in developing countries. In Malawi, nearly 30 school projects have been completed or are in the planning stages. With funds from the PASS Late Year Benefit, the Tadala abc Primary School in the village of Mzungu near the capital Lilongwe was opened in 2023, for example.

Our school construction project in Masumba, Malawi

Education as the key to a better life

The construction of an urgently needed primary school in Masumba, Malawi, will also start in 2025. The school is due to open its doors in time for the 2025/26 school year - an important step for the educational future of children in this region.

The project is made possible by the generous support of many private donors: the proceeds from the “PASS Late Year Benefit” concert 2023 with Stefanie Heinzmann, the proceeds from the raffle at the after-show party and a donation from the PASS Consulting Group together form the financial foundation of the school construction.

This is the fifth school to be built with donations from the PASS Late Year Benefit. On-site implementation is once again being carried out under the direction of Reiner Meutsch Stiftung FLY & HELP

Eight modern classrooms, a staff room, a secretary's office, sanitary facilities and a private well for the water supply are planned. In addition, the Malawi government is building teacher housing to make the location attractive for qualified teachers in the long term.

Update (June 2025): The project has made great progress in recent months. The first teachers' houses are already in the shell and the foundations of the actual school building are now being poured.

Our education project in Lilongwe, Malawi

Giving prospects. Enable education. Imparting competencies.

Inspired by the success of the project in Namibia, PASS supported the construction of another school in 2023 in cooperation with the Rotary Club of Aschaffenburg and the Reiner Meutsch Foundation Fly & Help. This time in Malawi, Africa. Proceeds for this had been collected by the company at the PASS Late Year Benefit 2022 in the Alte Oper Frankfurt. At the beginning of January 2023, the donation of 30,000 euros was handed over to the Rotary Club.

A school was to be built outside the capital Lilongwe, in a rural area, to promote school education and positive personal development of the children.

A suitable plot of land was quickly found: On the western outskirts of Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi, in the village of Mzungu. The municipality provided the land for the school construction free of charge.

Now a new school building with eight classrooms, staff room, office and toilets, a well and a solar system has been built. Furnished with school desks, chairs and teachers' desks in the classrooms. In addition, eight classes received new textbooks.

The size of the area allowed, parallel to the school construction, also the construction of a sports ground with two tennis courts as well as possibilities for playing soccer and basketball. Here, the children of the school - and also children from nearby schools - will be supported in their skills development through sports and mentoring programs. The partner for this is the Match Foundation, whose mission is to provide children with skills they need for a sustainable and successful future.

Special impressions of the inauguration ceremony in September 2023 are shown in this short documentary. In it, Tadala Kandulu (Match Foundation) and Dr. Michael Bargl, president of the Rotary Club of Aschaffenburg, are also featured.

About the Match Foundation Initiative

The link to tennis has to do with the local partner, the Match Foundation. Founder Tadala Kandulu, once one of the best tennis players in the country, owes her sport a scholarship in the USA. After her successful graduation, it was clear to Tadala that she wanted to return to her home country and give back and make a difference here. On the grounds of Lilongwe's stadium, she received permission to paint up a tennis court, set up a discarded net and began playing tennis with children from the nearby neighborhood - one of the poorest in the city.

The enthusiasm of the children was overwhelming. More and more came over after school. In the meantime, many children who would otherwise end up on the streets and, in the worst case, be drawn into crime, can be inspired to take part in this sporting activity in the company of other children and young people. Through good contacts in Germany, Tadala received donations in kind in the form of sports clothing and tennis equipment for the children. From the German side - the Rotary Club of Aschaffenburg was in charge here - it was obvious to bring the school construction and the work of Match Foundation together.

In the meantime, Match Foundation also arranges sponsorships for children who have good grades and regularly attend training so that they can attend a better school.
